Job Description
Situation:
For over 150 years the YMCA of Yarmouth has been part of the community, a place that brings people of every age and background together to find the support they need to grow in spirit, mind and body. Since its inception the YMCA of Yarmouth has responded to the changing needs of the community through its programs and services.
The YMCA of Fundy is a new initiative in partnership with the County of Annapolis to manage a 3 year old county owned facility as a YMCA and expand programs and services to the surrounding communities once the facility operation is established and viable.
The YMCA of Yarmouth is located in the downtown area of Yarmouth and serves a community of 7,600 from the Town of Yarmouth and 15,000 from surrounding areas. Through the commitment of a partnership involving 80 professional full and part time staff and over 60 volunteers it provides the community with Health, Fitness and Recreation, day camp as well as a residential camp. This charitable organization has an operating budget of $900,000 and is preparing for a major capital development renovation of its facility.
Strategic directions for the YMCA of Yarmouth have been developed to focus on human resources, financial development and program delivery strategies. The vision clearly states that “by 2012 we will be a vibrant and thriving organization, dedicated to building strong kids, strong families and strong communities. We will be the hub of the community”.
The YMCA of Fundy is located in the town of Cornwallis with a facility containing a 25 meter pool, training pool, whirl pool, walking track, conditioning room and multipurpose rooms. This facility will be undergoing a capital renovation is expected to open in 2011.
The retirement of the current YMCA of Yarmouth CEO has created a unique opportunity for an individual with demonstrated ability to inspire excellence, guide strategic decision-making and strong communication skills to expand services through a facility renovation in the already served Yarmouth area but also into the entire South West Nova area. The CEO will lead the development and implementation of business plans necessary to realize objectives and will manage the YMCA in a manner that ensures strategic, operational and financial excellence.
This is truly an amazing leadership opportunity for an executive who is a distinguished, inspirational and visionary leader with a proven and successful track record of management and operational experience of a rural or urban YMCA, a complex not-for-profit organization or a public or private company.
The transition to newly renovated facilities in both communities will require deliberate and strategic day to day as well as long-term planning. A key component of this position will be understanding the current situation, and responding to all the opportunities in a timely and effective manner, therefore ensuring the success of the future.
Nature and Scope:
Reporting directly to a Board of Directors the CEO oversees the direct delivery of operations of this charitable organization. He or she must ensure sound management of programs, human resources, finances and facilities as well as build strong relationships with key community stakeholders and members.
A skilled professional, the successful candidate is committed to the mission, vision and values of the YMCA, and has developed strong communication, operations management, financial management and networking skills.
The ability to understand and deliver a capital development strategy is critical. A strong financial background combined with demonstrated success in facility expansion and construction is an asset. He or she has demonstrated competence in leading and inspiring a staff team so they also experience a high level of achievement and success.
The CEO works within a framework of policy governance and executive limitations and provides leadership and vision necessary for the achievement of the strategic outcomes of the Association, and assists with building and enhancing the capacity to serve the existing and new communities.
The ideal candidate will possess outstanding interpersonal and communication skills; appropriate computer skills; have previous fund raising success in the charitable sector, and demonstrated external community leadership.
With fundraising experience and the ability to open doors and opportunities for the YMCA, he/she will effectively cultivate and develop key relationships and alliances with all levels of government and a vast network of community organizations, corporations, and foundations, and will engage, connect and inspire the community around the mission and strategic plan of the YMCA.
Responsibilities:
• Represent the charitable Association in a prudent and ethical manner within the community as well as regionally, nationally and internationally and in accordance to all laws and policies applicable to the operation of the Mission of the YMCA.
• Provide strategic leadership to the Board of Directors by developing and managing both the program and budget and the strategic plan for the Association that provides achievable and measurable targets and objectives.
• To translate these plans into a personal action plan to be approved by the Board and used to manage performance on an annual basis.
• To enhance the community’s perception and support of the YMCA by developing relationships and partnerships with local, provincial and national leaders, businesses, elected officials, government agencies, charities and foundations.
• Development, management and control of a sizable operating budget and will work with the Chief Financial Officer to ensure the Association’s financial health within the context of the Boards stated Mission, Vision, Values and Strategic Plan.
- With the CFO, will supply the Board with operating budgets, monthly financial statements, cash flow reports and investment and endowment reports.
- Will follow all financial policies as prescribed by the Executive Limitations.
• Will ensure the assets of the organization are adequately protected and maintained according to the direction of the board.
• Involvement and leadership in annual, endowment and capital campaigns.
• Development and implementation of a program strategy that is financially viable with regular analysis for feasibility and long range sustainability that also meets the needs of the community.
• Development and implementation of a comprehensive human resource strategy.
• Experience in capital development projects and in managing community partnerships will be necessary in this position.
• Will identify and designate a person within the organization to act as a temporary backup for their position to protect the organization from the sudden loss of executive services.
• Successful candidates will be energetic, with an entrepreneurial spirit to position the YMCA as a leading and cornerstone charity in the community while also protecting the financial integrity and public image of the Association.
• Will maintain communications and positive relationship with other YMCAs, YMCA Canada East Management Resource Centre andYMCA Canada and fulfill all requirements of by-law 12 as part of the constitution and by-laws of YMCA Canada.
Qualifications:
• University degree in a related field
• Past YMCA or other senior management experience in the for profit or not for profit sector with a minimum of 5 - 10 years of progressive management responsibility and experience leading a multi-service organization.
• The candidate must have an exceptional track record including: leading significant growth, implementation of successful community partnerships, involvement in annual, endowment and capital campaigns, development of comprehensive human resource strategies and planning and deliver of capital development/expansion strategy.
• Demonstrated commitment to the development of healthy and vibrant communities.
• Current criminal reference report is a condition of employment.
